2018 Pyeongchang Olympian Ages Histograms and Statistics

It has been a while since I made one of these posts, but I again collected some statistics from the 2018 winter games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. So why not put them up on this blog?

Again, similar to the stats I put up last time for the Sochi Games, the Olympics is a young man or woman's game. Here's a histogram of the ages (I used February 9th to calculate the ages):

Here's the histogram for the males only:

Here's the histogram for the female Olympians only:
The male average age was 1.3 years older than the female one, which isn't that surprising.

2012 London Olympics, Body Mass Index (BMI) Histograms, Male and Female

Finally a new post for my long neglected Olympics Statistics blog!

From the height and weight data on each Olympian's profile page for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, I have produced some body mass index (BMI) histograms. I only used Olympians that had both valid height and weight data (a number were missing either height or weight or both).

The first BMI histogram is the overall one for every athlete regardless of sex. The mean value was 22.9 and the median was 22.5. The minimum BMI was 13.3 and the maximum 63.9. The maximum BMI belonged to Ricardo Blas Junior, competing for Guam in the 100 kg plus Judo event. He competed at a height of 185 cm (6 foot 1) and weighed in at 218 kg (481 pounds). The minimum BMI belonged to soccer player Cristian Tello who played for Spain the men's event, competing at a weight of 43 kg (95 pounds) and a height of 180 cm (5 foot 11). Looking at pictures of Tello, I believe there is a possibility it is a typo.

The next histogram is for males only. The mean value was 24.0 and the median 23.5. The minimum was again 22.9 and the maximum was also again 63.7.

The next histogram is for females. The mean value was lower than for males, at 21.6 and the median was lower too at 21.3. The minimum BMI was higher than for males, albeit slightly at 13.8. The maximum BMI was significantly lower at 52.5. The maximum female BMI belonged to Holley Mangold, who competed in the women's super heavyweight weightlifting competition. Mangold competed at a height of 173 cm (5 foot 8) and a weight of 157 kg (346 pounds). The minimum female BMI belonged to Doreen Amata of Nigerian, competing in the high jump. Her height was 198 cm (6 foot 6) and her weight 54 kg (119 pounds).

Overall, Male and Female 2012 Olympian Age Statistics and Histograms

The Olympics is a young man and woman's game, some sports especially. Here's a histogram of the age distribution of the Olympians in the London 2012 games for all the athletes whose profile on the official website provided date of birth data. The ages shown are those for the 27th of July of 2012, the start of the games.

The mean or average age of an Olympian in 2012 was 26.5 years versus 25.8 years for the median. There's a significant long tail corresponding to older ages with a small proportion of Olympians over 40 years old.

We can break up the ages into male and female histograms. Here's the male only histogram:

The mean age was 27.0 years versus 26.2 years for the median.

Here's the female only histogram.

The mean age for females was 25.9 years which is smaller than for males. The median age for females, 25.4 was also smaller than for males.

First Post

The 2012 Olympic Games in London are over, however they've left behind a rich set of statistics to ponder. For work I gathered some data about the Olympians for a project and thought maybe they would be of some interest to others. I intend to make a series of posts with various statistics on this year's Olympians. Check back every once in a while, but not too often. I'll make a blog post whenever I'm feeling motivated.
